Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride Friday 6 August

Friday 6 August

Another beautiful clear winter's day.  A busy morning was lined up for us.  Three riders from Newcastle - Russ, Jesse and Richard - rode the rickshaw from near Bulahdelah south west up through the range and across to Booral.  It was a beautiful drive for the support vehicles – maybe not quite so enjoyable for the rickshaw wallahs.  A large part of the ride was along climbing, twisting hilly road: I think the longest climb we have come across in the Rickshaw Ride so far.  There was a seriously large amount of walking and pushing by passengers.

During one rest stop, we reflected on the Rickshaw Wallah video and the short sequence where Raju has to carry five 50 kg bags of rice in his rickshaw.  Our riders could empathize with the extraordinary work load that the Bangladeshi rickshaw wallahs have to carry at times.  Fortunately, the traffic volume on our road was very low today (apart from two large timber hauling trucks) which made for a more relaxed ride.

While we were enjoying the scenery, Valma, Kevin and Khaleque visited two schools in Bulahdelah and did their stuff once again with the kids.  It will be Kevin and Valma's last school visits as they are flying home tomorrow.  They have done an amazing job, particularly with the school visits.
