Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride Saturday 7 August

Saturday 7 August

An early start today, with a long ride from Booral down to Newcastle in time for a reception at 3:00 PM.  It wasn't the easiest ride, with undulating country all the way from Booral to the Pacific Highway - not as tough as Friday, but not easy either.  We had quite a few riders from Toronto (south of Newcastle) riding the rickshaw into Newcastle.  Nick Sampson joined the team from Sydney and he will drive one of the support vehicles for the next week.

Kevin and Valma left us, as planned, in the early afternoon.  Hopefully, Kevin will be able to rest properly at home and get over the medical problems that have plagued him the last couple of weeks.  The rickshaw arrived at the Newcastle Netball Association's field at 3:00 PM.  Nathan Wilson rode the rickshaw in and picked up the Mayor of Newcastle, Cr John Tate, for the ride through the netball courts to the reception area.  Nathan is going to Bangladesh later this year to work with Symbiosis for two years.

The Mayor made a fine welcome speech and we were also made to feel very much at home by Del, the President of the Newcastle Netball Association.  James Mackay of Council was particularly helpful in making sure everything worked well.  The whole sporting area was a sea of life with netball games being played on most of the courts and soccer and Aussie Rules being played on surrounding ovals.  It was a good place to be.
